Watching TOYS. Again.
This remains one of my favorite pictures. And the vitriol I see whenever it’s mentioned fascinates me. People loathe this film, but can never seem to articulate why.
I always hear a lot about Barry Levinson’s writing not being focused, but I don’t feel that holds any water. In fact, I think it’s an unusually tight screenplay compared to what we see today, most likely due to Levinson having developed the project for 10 years before it shot. One can’t say it isn’t fleshed out.
It seems to me that the real problem people have is with whimsy. They don’t get it, and because they don’t get it, they reject it outright. It’s sad, really.
