They may want to be compatibilists, but that doesn’t mean they can rectify the two positions. 
You can say god gave you free will, but that cannot be so if he knew every choice you were to make before you were even born.  
You could achieve compatibilism if your version of god was not omniscient, but I doubt any of them would concede that. I actually doubt any of them would follow this conversation at all.
The whole notion of god giving man free will is just another translucent trick the apologists trot out when they’re backed into a corner.
