I was actually just discussing this the other day.

For anyone not familiar, I would regularly call in to “The Midnight Miracle Hour” with Pastor Dean Pepin and tackle various apologetic issues.

I remember the last call I did I had asked why god never healed amputees or those born with cleft lips and Pastor Dean asserted that amputees had been healed, he just couldn’t provide documentation. Eventually, he got so upset that he hung up.

I stopped calling in because I felt we had reached an impasse. Every week I would tackle all sorts of the worst apologetic arguments - from “Hitler was an atheist” to “Evolution contradicts the second law of thermodynamics” to “If God proved his existence there would be no free will.”

At one point Pastor Dean said I knew the bible better than he did.

I genuinely grew to like those people. I abhor what they’re doing, but at least they’re doing it earnestly.

The other problem was that it was a prayer show, meaning they took prayer requests and “healed” people, so whenever they got trapped into a corner logically they would say something akin to “This is not an apologetics show. This is for prayers,” and drop the call.

But, yes. I think it’s time for me to reemerge and see if they’ve grown in terms of rationality. I’ll let everyone know when it happens.

Did anybody at GE ever…you know, actually watch The Matrix?

You know, that movie about how a giant, all-seeing network of machines eventually reduced humanity to a gooey pile of energy-generating puke-pods and enslaved them using a complicated dreamscape that simulates what life was like before everything went all pear-shaped?

Wasn’t that movie a warning about the dangers of trusting anything too much, but specifically, trusting a network of machines to do what’s right for humanity? As opposed to reducing humanity’s involvement to a mere mathematical equation, the result of which sees humanity continued, but only in the service of perpetuating the giant automaton nightmare they created in their desire for an easy life?

And wasn’t the “bad guy” in that movie Agent Smith, a rogue AI that seeks to destroy all “natural” “life” and the Matrix itself? And doesn’t most of movies two and three in the trilogy involve Smith’s growth and propagation, unchecked and unmatched, as a super-destructive software virus that seeks to obliterate both the virtual and actual worlds?

And with all that to consider, why the Hell would the people at GE seek to associate their networked healthcare computer solutions with a movie that’s all about how humans are force-fed a false sense of security and safety while a “networked computer solution” saps their energy and casts off the dead like a worn-out 9-volt battery? What dopey idiot came up with this idea? What concept artist storyboarded it for him? What creative director smiled wryly and nodded as the presentation was being pitched to the company footing the bill? Why didn’t Hugo Weaving say “Um, I’m happy for this paycheck and all, but this kind of doesn’t make sense.”? Why did no one figure out a better way to get the point across than comparing this seemingly-productive blend of technology and healthcare to a Revelation-esque prophecy about the dangers of our loss of care and compassion in the face of technology?

If you can’t compare two concepts in your mind, then sure, it’s a funny commercial. But for anybody with even a spark of critical thinking in their head, what comfort does this commercial provide? Why would you look at this and think GE has any better grip on the realities of personal data and security than the Wachowskis do?

Maybe I’m the Oracle or something and I’m the only one who can see how stupid this is as a storytelling mechanism. If so, I’m going to go bake some cookies and be all stoic.

Maybe General Electric, a company that can build fancy medical equipment they can continually charge whatever for because there are no microeconomic checks in health care alongside horrible front-loading washing machines that break in my basement after five years of use, enjoy irony in advertising. ???

Mostly I’m concerned about the health of the GE ad folks, since they obviously just woke from a 13 year coma thinking this was still a timely pop culture reference.

In defense of the GE ad people: at least they aren’t the Hyundai ad people.
